Royal Representatives Present King’s Award to Sky Medical Technology at Sci-Tech Daresbury

On Monday 17th November, Sky Medical Technology Ltd (Sky), parent company of Firstkind Ltd, welcomed Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, Lady Redmond MBE and Sir Phil Redmond CBE to Sci-Tech Daresbury’s Innovation Centre, to officially present Sky with their King’s Award for Enterprise.

In May 2025, Sky received the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category, for its breakthrough wound care technology – the geko® device. Clinically proven to more than double the rate of wound healing, the geko® device has driven a transformation in chronic wound care (lower limb ulcers), enabling scalable, cost-effective healthcare delivery across major markets.

The celebrations commenced with canapés and refreshments, bringing together more than 30 of Sky’s partners, suppliers, investors, and team members for an afternoon of connection and reflection on their shared journey to date. Lady Redmond MBE delivered an inspiring speech, commending the dedication behind achieving the King’s Award and the continued efforts that support this success. Robin Roberts from the Cheshire Lieutenancy also read the official charter from His Majesty King Charles III.

In delivering his acceptance speech, Bernard Ross, CEO and Founder of Sky, said:

“Chronic wounds are a major global health challenge – costly, persistent, and often incredibly difficult for patients to live with. Our goal has always been to address this need with a solution that’s both effective and accessible.

“What makes this prestigious King’s Award so meaningful is that it recognises both innovation and impact. It validates not just the science behind the geko device, but the way it’s being used in real-world clinical settings to accelerate healing, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life.

“This is a significant moment for our team and our partners. It reflects years of dedicated work across research, development, and clinical application.”

Also commenting, John Leake, Business Growth Director at Sci-Tech Daresbury, said:

“Sky Medical Technology’s achievement embodies the spirit of innovation that defines the Sci-Tech Daresbury community. The King’s Award for Enterprise recognises not only their world-class technology but also their commitment to improving lives through science and collaboration. It’s inspiring to see such groundbreaking work thriving here at our national science and innovation campus and a privilege to have supported Sky during the more than 15 years that they have been based at Sci-Tech Daresbury. It’s a true example of what can be achieved when visionary research meets entrepreneurial drive.”

Now in its 59th year, the King’s Awards for Enterprise are the UK’s highest recognition for business excellence. Winners earn the right to use the King’s Awards Emblem for five years – a mark of trust and innovation recognised globally.

Applications for the 2026 King’s Awards opened 6th May 2025.
